Welcome to Popham's Wesley Church
The Wesleyan Mission in Madras was established in 1817 with its first chapel built soon after. This building proved inconvenient so a new chapel was planned, money was raised and construction begun. After extensive ground works to support the new building the chapel was opened on 25 April 1822. The ground floor contained offices and meeting rooms, while the chapel itself was on the first floor so that it might benefit from better air circulation and less disturbance from the noise, dust and insects of Popham's Broadway, one of the principal commercial streets of the city. Although no designer is named, the circumstances of the construction (including two elevations and a section) are described in Elijah Hoole, Personal narrative of a mission to the south of India, from 1820 to 1828 (London, 1829).
